Barrett Homer Lifts Lady Tide To 6-5 Win Over Moshannon Valley

AMESVILLE – The sign of a good team is that on any given day, the hero could be anyone up and down the line-up.  In Friday’s Moshannon Valley League battle, the hero for the Curwensville Area High School softball team came in the form of designated player Megan Barrett.  Barrett went 4-for-4 at the plate against Moshannon Valley, including the game winning hit in the sixth inning to lift the Lady Tide to a 6-5 victory.

The senior hitting specialist was sitting on a two-out, 1-and-0 fast ball from Damsel pitcher Laura Harris and drove the ball hard to left field.  Barrett’s liner had just enough height to trim the top of the fence on the way out of the park.  The shot broke a 5-5 deadlock that held up to give the Tide its fifth win of the week.

“Other teams can’t take our designated player position for granted,” said Tide skipper Allen Leigey.  “Megan has been pounding the ball lately, and has settled into her role very well. Her bat has been huge for us this season.”

Barrett scored twice in the game with two RBI while Taylor Goodman also belted out four hits in five at bats including a triple.  Sarah Wriglesworth added two hits for the winners.  Harris slapped out three hits in three official at bats which included a double to help keep the Damsels in the game.

The Curwensville big hitters were a big part of the action from the start of the game as Goodman singled to open the contest.  Madi Peterman and Tiffany Carter worked Harris for back-to-back free passes to load the bases.  Molly Demchak drove home the first run when she lifted a sacrifice fly to left, and with two outs, Barrett singled to put the visitors up 2-0.

Moshannon Valley worked its small-ball game for two runs in the bottom of the first as the first three batters dropped down bunt attempts.  The Curwensville defense struggled at times on the day, and with two errors, an RBI sacrifice bunt by Kristen Gallagher and a single from Harris, the score was tied after the first four Damsel batters.

The Tide threatened in the third inning by loading the bases and in the fourth when Carter tried to score from first on a long drive from Demchak.  Both times the Damsel defense rose to the occasion as a ground out ended the third and a relay to the plate cut down Carter at the plate.

Two more Curwensville errors in the fourth lead to three runs for the home team as nine batters came to the plate.  Hits by Brandee Keith and Kristen O’Donnell also aided the Damsel push as the score moved to 5-2.

However, the Golden Tide was not about to go home quietly.  Cheyenne Pentz opened the fifth with a single, but in the middle of Barrett’s next at bat, a lightning strike halted the game for 30 minutes.

The first pitch to Barrett as the skies cleared was turned into her third hit of the day and put runners on first and third.  A Wriglesworth single allowed Pentz to score before Goodman drove in Barrett with two outs.  Peterman’s grounder up the middle was mishandled as Wriglesworth scampered home to again knot the score at 5-5.

The momentum shift in the fifth ignited the Tide as the defense along with strong pitching from Tierra Shope kept Moshannon Valley of the boards the rest of the game.  This set the stage for Barrett’s big knock to win the game.

“This was the best energy that we’ve had as a team all season,” Leigey said.  “We’ve shuffled some players around in the past few games, and tonight everyone seemed to really do what we needed them to do.”

Shope scattered eight hits  in the game while striking out eight and walking only two and giving up no earned runs.  Harris allowed 12 hits, struck out six and walked five in the loss.

Curwensville’s busy schedule continues next week as they travel to Kane on Monday, and Brockway Tuesday before hosting Johnsonburg on Wednesday.
