CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School softball team needed only eight total innings to win two games 15-0 and 19-3 against Sheffield Wednesday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Tierra Shope tossed her first career no-hitter in the first game while her teammates belted out 31 hits on the day.
“Sheffield hasn’t won a game this year,” said Lady Tide skipper Allen Leigey. “You always have to worry about playing down to the competition. The girls quickly calmed those worries and took control of the games.”
Shope held the Lady Wolverines in check in game one. She was perfect through three innings having struck out the side in the second inning and allowing no balls out of the infield. However, the long offensive innings and the chilly weather may have tightened her for the fourth frame. With one out (a soft liner back to the circle), Shope walked the next two batters to lose the perfect game. A fielder’s choice at second was recorded for out number two, but a third free pass loaded the bases. One pitch later a ground out to second baseman Taylor Goodman ended the threat.
“This was more innings than Tierra has pitched all season, and she performed as well as I can hope for,” said Leigey. “She did everything I asked her to do and was able to close out the last innings of both games unharmed.”
For the second game in a row, Goodman led the Tide offense. Goodman was 4-for-4 with two home runs and two doubles that allowed her to score four times with four RBI’s. The sophomore second baseman’s lead-off solo homer in the bottom of the fourth on a 1-and-1 pitch ended the game with the 15-run mercy rule.
“Taylor is just stinging the ball right now,” said Leigey. “She is hitting the ball very hard, and we need that to continue to win. The whole line-up has contributed over the last few games, and I am pleased with how the total offense has fed off each other.”
Three other Curwensville batters had two hits apiece in the opening game. Tiffany Carter slapped a homer and a double while Madi Peterman and Sarah Wriglesworth both singled twice. Designated player Abby Johnson drove in three runs in the opening game with Carter and Peterman each adding two RBI’s.
The Tide scored once in the first inning and followed that by sending 12 batters to the plate in the second. Eight runs crossed the plate on eight hits in the second inning. The offense never stumbled as the hosts plated five runners in the third inning on three hits to set the score at 14-0 before the homer in the fourth ended the contest.
The Wolverines took the home-team position in game two, and after shutting out Curwensville in the top of the first, took their only lead of the afternoon. Shope opened the bottom of the first inning by hitting Anna Baldensperger. While striking out the next two batters, a wild pitch and a passed ball put the runner at third. The unearned run came home on an error in the infield.
Curwensville came right back in the second inning as Molly Demchak notched the first of her four hits in the second game. Cheyenne Pentz followed with a hit and Sarah Wriglesworth dropped a bunt down to move up the runners. Wriglesworth reached on an error at first and both runs scored. Katie Wriglesworth then took one for the team and the sisters came home on a Johnson single.
The inning continued after the first out with a Goodman single, and after the second out Carter singled home two runs. Demchak finished the scoring with a double (her second hit of the inning) to make the score 7-1.
Sheffield did manage single runs in the second and third innings, but really didn’t threaten the strong Tide showing again in the game.
Sarah Wriglesworth’s lead-off triple led to a run in the third as Johnson grounded out for another RBI. However, the game was put away in the fourth when Curwensville broke loose for 11 runs on nine hits in the top of the fourth. The Lady Tide sent 16 batters to the plate. The inning was highlighted by triples from Bressler and Carter with Demchak and Pentz both hitting safely twice in the frame.
After piling up a 19-3 lead, the Lady Tide needed only to record three outs in the bottom of the frame to end the game with the mercy rule. Shope quickly ended the contest on nine pitches and three K’s.
“These were two games we couldn’t afford to give away,” said Leigey. “The team went out and did what we had to do and came out with the wins.”
Demchak finished game two 4-for-4 with three runs batted in while Pentz ended with three hits in four attempts. Johnson had two hits in game two and her three RBI’s for the night cap gave her seven on the day. Bressler drove in four runs in game two on two hits including the triple with the bases loaded.
Curwensville moves to 6-2 on the season and hopes to keep the strong play going. The team travels to Ridgway for a 4:15 start Thursday.
