Johnsonburg’s Strong Second Half Dooms Lady Tide, 62-29

CURWENSVILLE – The Johnsonburg Ramettes used nine three-pointers Friday night to break open a tight game in the second quarter to defeat Curwensville 62-29 in an Allegheny Mountain League game on the Lady Tide home court.

Johnsonburg beat the Lady Tide on January 11 in their first meeting of the season, at Johnsonburg, 73-49.

It was a slow start for both squads as Curwensville jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Johnsonburg scored the final seven points of the first quarter to move into the second eight minutes out in front 9-5.

The Ramettes would stretch the lead early in the second period to 12-5 before the Tide made it close at 12-9 only to see the now 9-8 Johnsonburg team take a ten point halftime lead, 27-17.

Senior Justis Myers of Johnsonburg had 14 of her game high 29 in the second frame to help her team pull away from the Lady Tide including a game high six treys. Myers scored 24 points in the first game against the Tide earlier this season.

The second half was truly a Ramette festival as they dominated Curwensville, winning the final sixteen minutes 35-12 to coast to the win.

Each team shot 24 free throws with Johnsonburg connecting on 15 while the Lady Tide made 11. Well over 30 fouls were called on the evening.

Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken said after the defeat, “We had a lot of good looks at the basket tonight but we just came up short on a lot of them.”

Outscored 13-7 in the third quarter, McCracken responded by saying “The third quarter seems to have hurt us all year long. We did some things there that really didn’t help us.”

McCracken closed with, “We are getting better. I will say that. It doesn’t always show in the number of wins though. There are five games left and if the girls continue to play hard we should find a way to win a few of them.”

Sophomore Rhianon Fowler helped Myers and the Ramette offense with 15 points.

Katrina Seaburn had six for Curwensville, while Taylor Bumbarger and Savannah Strickland each tallied five.

In the junior varsity contest it was Johnsonburg picking up the victory in defeating the young Lady Tide 59-12.

Curwensville, now 3-14, makes the long trip to Sheffield on Tuesday in an Allegheny Mountain League game with the JVs starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.

NOTE: Johnsonburg head coach, Mike Zilkofski, recently announced his resignation after five years as the Ramettes mentor, compiling a 53-57 record through the victory Friday night against the Lady Tide. Zilkofski has been with the Johnsonburg program for twelve years overall.
