Lady Beavers Score 11 in the Fourth for 12-0 Shutout Over Lady Bisons

DUBOIS – Freshman Sami Jo Kirk turned in an auspicious pitching debut and DuBois broke up a tight District 9 Northern Allegany League Big School Division scrap with 11 runs in the fourth inning to pin a 12-0 loss on Clearfield in scholastic softball action at the Highland Park Elementary School Field Thursday.

Kirk limited the Lady Bisons to two hits while striking out six and walking one in the District 9 Northern Allegany League Big School Division opener for both teams.

The game, which also counted in the Central Penn League, was halted after Clearfield (0-2) batted in the top of the fifth because of the Mercy Rule.

Janell Zalno doubled and Suzie Colesar singled for the only Lady Bison safeties.

DuBois, coming off an 11-5 non-league loss to District 6 Class AA power Philipsburg-Osceola a night earlier, got on the board in the lower third when Kirsten Wilcox singled and Carly Wallock tripled.

The Lady Bisons turned a groundout into a double play when Wallock tried to score on third baseman Mia Keener’s throw to first. Colesar cut her down at the plate, Chantel Read applying the tag.

“Then the wheels came off,” Clearfield coach Bob Dixon said. “We didn’t do anything right in the fourth inning.”

The Lady Beavers did, mixing six of their nine hits off Andrea Butler with four walks, a hit batsman and three Lady Bison errors.

Wilcox was the big gun with a two-run homer and a two-run single.

Butler, who pitched seven innings against State College Wednesday, threw 73 pitches during the long DuBois rally.

“Andrea was really struggling and they hit some real shots,” Dixon said. “It wasn’t a good night.

The Lady Bisons are booked for three games in as many days next week.

They have a home D9NAL Big School Division game against Bradford sandwiched between trips to Hollidaysburg Wednesday and Altoona Friday for CPL contests.
