Bisons Win Opener, Bottom of Order Backs Moyer\’s 12-strikeout Performance

NORFOLK, Va. – A strong outing by senior hurler Michael Moyer and clutch hitting from the bottom of the batting order were the keys as the Clearfield Area High School baseball team opened the season by defeating Norfolk Collegiate 8-2 Friday evening.

\”It\’s good to start out with a win,\” coach Sid Lansberry said after the Bisons\’ first Southern Trip victory in three years. \”Moyer pitched very well, and it\’s good to get production out of the 7-8-9 hitters.\”

Corey Bookhamer enjoyed a perfect game at the plate with three hits and two runs batted in, Isaac Butler knocked in three runs with two hits and Matt Lonjin chipped in with a two-run single.

Moyer\’s six-inning performance was highlighted by a career-high 12 strikeouts.

The right-hander gave up both runs and five hits while walking four.

Bookhamer, a senior southpaw, mopped up with a scoreless seventh inning.

He singled and scored on Butler\’s double in the second inning and then picked up an RBI with his second hit in the third.

After the hosts got on the board in the third, the Bisons broke it open with a four-run outburst in the fourth frame.

Sayers, who had singled, scored on a passed ball. Butler followed with a single for an RBI and Lonjin came through with his hit for two more runs.

In the sixth, Sayers and Hoffman walked, Bookhamer doubled in a run and Butler grounded into a forceout for the final tally.

\”It\’s great if we can keep that up,\” Lansberry said after adding up the totals of the 7-8-9 batters. \”I\’m sure the top part of the order is going to come through eventually.\”

He noted leadoff hitter Jarrin Campman and Parker Herrington had only one hit but were on base three times apiece.

Norfolk Collegiate\’s Zack Morrison homered in the fifth inning.

The Bisons jump right into their Central Penn League schedule Tuesday at State College.
