HARRISBURG – Gov. Edward G. Rendell congratulated the Pittsburgh Steelers today on their record-setting sixth NFL championship after the team defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in last night’s Super Bowl.
The win also opens the possibility for a lucky Pennsylvania resident and guest to enjoy a three-day trip to Phoenix following the governor’s wager with his Arizona counterpart.
“I tip my hat to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Rooney family, and the team’s fans,” said Rendell. “Last night, the team showed incredible composure and determination in coming from behind to win the game. Their victory also means a Steelers fan from Pennsylvania and their guest will get to take their team pride to Arizona for a three-day trip to Phoenix.”
Last week, Rendell and Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer placed a wager on the outcome of the big game.
Under the wager, the state with the losing team had to offer a three-day vacation to a resident of the state with the winning team. Accommodations, meals and tickets to the different venues included in each vacation package were donated by the respective companies, organizations and venues. The Pennsylvania Tourism Office and Greater Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau helped to coordinate the Pennsylvania package.
“Starting tomorrow, we’re going to launch an online essay contest asking fans to tell us why they love the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said the governor. “We’ll choose the top five responses and pick one grand prize winner for the trip to Arizona, but the four remaining semi-finalists won’t walk away empty handed; each of them will receive two tickets to a future regular season Steelers home game.
“There’s no question the Steelers have one of the most loyal and diehard fan bases in all of professional sports, so I’m looking forward to some pretty creative responses.”
The “Why I love the Pittsburgh Steelers” essay contest will get underway tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 3. Those eligible persons interested in entering can do so at either at here or here, where they will find a form to fill out with their 250-word essay and contact information. Users need only enter at one site.
The deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009.
The grand prize winner will receive roundtrip airfare to Phoenix via US Airways; three nights at the Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa, a luxurious and renowned Arizona landmark; two rounds of golf on any of the resort’s three, 18-hole championship golf courses; dinner for two at one of the city’s finest restaurants; and two seats at a regular season home game of one of Arizona’s major league sports teams (the Cardinals, Suns, Diamondbacks or Coyotes).
