Free Throws Prove Vital as Lady Bisons Defeat Lady Beavers 58-50

CLEARFIELD – Head coach Joey Castagnolo huddled his team late in the fourth quarter and told them, “This will come down to who can shoot foul shots.”  His prediction was right on as the Lady Bisons of Clearfield went 10 for 15 in the fourth quarter from the foul line enroute to a 58-50 victory over the Lady Beavers of DuBois.

“The game came down to foul shots,” said Castagnolo outside the locker room.  “They were trying to gain the advantage late on the line and we buried those buckets.”

After the first quarter, Clearfield held a 17-10 advantage, but got into early foul trouble that led to only six points in the second quarter.  DuBois took advantage of the fouls and brought the score to 23-22 at halftime.

The second half belonged to Clearfield as they took advantage of the Beavers’ ten second-half fouls and turned them into ten points while also making shots deep and in transition.  Leading scorer Annie Janocko accounted for 17 points while also chipping in three rebounds and two assists.  Elizabeth Peters led the Lady Bisons in rebounds with six, while both Gwenn Porter and Jayme Ryan added in ten points each.  Porter also was the assist leader for the Lady Bisons, accounting for six.

DuBois head coach Sam Kirk brought his girls back to within five late in the game before getting into foul trouble that led to the free throws.

“DuBois is a great team, and they played extremely tough late in the game,” said Castagnolo.  “Our girls stayed calm and played well late.”

Kirsten Wilcox led the Beavers with 14 points while accounting for three rebounds and two assists.  Carly Wallock accounted for an additional 13 points while Lindsay Obremski added in 12 of her own.

Castagnolo pointed out that his Lady Bisons played a well-rounded and balanced game.

“Everyone contributed, and that is what won the game for us,” said Castagnolo.

In the Junior Varsity game, DuBois defeated Clearfield 38-20.

The Lady Bisons (4-4) are back in action Tuesday night as they travel to take on the Elk County Catholic Crusaders while the Lady Beavers (1-8) will host St. Marys on Monday.
