DuBois Hosts Holiday Basketball Tournament

The DuBois Area Beavers hosted the Holiday Tournament at the DuBois Area High School on December 29 and 30. Gathering in Beaver Country this year for the tournament were the Brookville Raiders, Brockway Rovers, and new to the tournament, the Brashear Bulls.

Facing off in the first round were the Brookville Raiders playing the DuBois Beavers, as well as the Brockway Rovers tackling the Brashear Bulls. With the times set and the court ready, all four teams engaged in battle to see who would be left standing in the two day tournament.

Playing first was Brashear and Brockway. Brockway took on a tough Brashear team who traveled the whole way to DuBois from inner city Pittsburgh. With tons of athletic talent, Brashear played to expectation easily downing Brockway in the first round ending with a score of 79-57

Taking the court next were the DuBois Beavers and the Brookville Raiders. In this rugged conference battle, DuBois came out swinging dumping 19 to Brookville’s nine by the end of the first period. In the 2nd period there was more of the same as DuBois outscored Brookville again, ending the half with the Beavers in good position 36-23. After half time DuBois dominated the rest of the game holding the Raiders to just 15 points in the 2nd half. DuBois won the game 61-38 snapping a 5-game losing streak to move their record to 2-6.

The next day the four teams took the court again as Brookville was ready to take on Brockway and DuBois was preparing mentally for a tough game against Brashear in the championship game.

Playing first were the Brockway Rovers and Brookville Raiders. As both teams came off tough losses the day before, the two teams went at it, trying to gain some steam to push forward into an always tough January. As the ball was tipped off to begin the game, the defense proved to be a great factor for both teams. Defensively both teams stood strong and ended the 1st half with the score 22-21in favor of Brockway. Brockway came out in the 2nd half blazing the net to outscore the Raiders winning the game 59-52. Brockway forward Mike Shannon led scoring with 15.

Coming up next was the final matchup of the evening pitting Pittsburgh’s Brashear Bulls against the DuBois Area Beavers. Both teams entered the contest in high hopes of winning the tournament. As the game started Brashear controlled the game using its quick ball handling skills to overwhelm the DuBois defense. Brashear gained a 39-20 lead by halftime and retained that type of lead through the entire game dropping DuBois to win the tournament 69-50. Garret Peterson led the scoring for the Beavers with 17 as senior sensation Jordan Labue came up big with 16.

The DuBois Beavers remain proud as they put up a strong showing hosting the tournament. The DuBois Beavers (2-7) move on to play at the St. Marys Flying Dutch Tuesday, January 6.
