CURWENSVILLE – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) girls basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first period Monday night over Curwensville and then hung on down the stretch to pick up their second victory of the season, 39-31.
The Lady Tide managed only two points in that first eight minutes and trailed after one period 10-2. Curwensville’s first bucket came with 1:14 remaining in the opening round by Lady Tide Alesia Bressler. However, the Tide would rally all night long before dropping to 0-4 on the year under coach Vic Gearhart.
Gearhart afterwards talked about his team’s effort, “I am really proud of these girls. They really fought to get back into the game. That was nice to see.”
Curwensville started the rally right from the start of the second frame as they outscored the Cardinals 9-8 to cut the DCC lead to seven at the half, 18-11.
Another good period for the Lady Cardinals was the third as they widened their margin to 30-17 by putting up 12 points to Curwensville’s six. DCC freshman Lauresa Gulvas came off the bench to score five in the third to pace the visitors from DuBois.
Then Curwensville made things very interesting in the final period as they cut deep into the 13 point DCC lead. The Lady Cardinals didn’t score until there was 2:45 left in the game. The Lady Tide cut the Lady Cardinals lead to three on several occasions. Unfortunately Curwensville would get no closer as DCC ran their record to 2-5.
Tide senior Hannah Walls fueled the fourth quarter comeback, scoring seven of her game high 11 points to keep the hopes up for the home team. Bressler finished with eight followed by junior Tess Bloom and her six.
Gearhart also mentioned, “We just had too many turnovers and giveaways. There was a lot of physical pressure out there tonight and we just have to learn to get through that kind of play. Still, I was very proud of the overall team effort.”
DuBois Central Catholic was lead by Miller Hopkins with nine and Megan Witherow with eight.
The Lady Cardinals also won the junior varsity game, beating the Lady Tide youngsters 36-25.
The Lady Tide continue their season with a January 5 game at home against the Lady Warriors of West Branch in a Moshannon Valley league game.
