Zimmermann\’s Grand Slam, Hoffman\’s Relief Pitching Give Chiefs Weekend Split

HYDE – James Zimmermann\’s grand slam home run in the sixth inning and Justin Hoffman\’s five-inning relief pitching stint keyed the Clearfield Legion Post 6 baseball team\’s 7-6 win over Punxsutawney in Jefferson County League action at the Bison Sports Complex Sunday evening.

The comeback victory gave the Chiefs a 1-1 start. They had dropped their season opener, 8-4, to Brookville Saturday afternoon.

Punxsy expanded its early lead against starter Aaron Sayers to 5-0 in the third inning lead when Chiefs manager Sid Lansberry brought in Hoffman, who held the visitors to one run and three hits. The right-hander struck out one and walked four.

Clearfield trailed 5-1 after five innings, stranding seven runners against three Punxsy pitchers, who were limited in pitch counts because the high school team still is involved in the District 9 Class AAA Playoffs.

In the sixth, two errors and a botched fielder\’s choice play gave the Chiefs a run and left two runners aboard. Wil Bacharach walked for the second time and Jarrin Campman singled to make it 6-3 before Zimmermann unloaded his homer over the fence in left center.

Adam Jury and Kyle Kline had two hits apiece for the Chiefs. Jury also drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Starting pitcher Austin Furman and Zach Smith each had two hits and two runs batted in for Punxsy.

On Saturday, Brookville snapped a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth inning and Tyler Ferry pitched two scoreless innings in relief of winner Chase Lyle.

Nick Bishop, Dusty Dumbroski and Garrett Spence had two hits apiece and combined for five RBIs.

Jury and Derek Danver singled and doubled for Clearfield\’s only hits.

The Chiefs tied the game with two runs in the second on Danver\’s single, two walks, an error and Jury\’s double.

Danver drove in their other two in the fifth.

Corey Bookhamer took the loss, with Sayers and Parker Herrington working in relief.

Herrington turned in a strong performance, racking up six strikeouts and shutting out Brookville over the final two innings.

The Chiefs will travel to DuBois Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game.
