PHILIPSBURG – Clearfield out-hit Philipsburg-Osceola 13-9, but the Mounties capitalized on seven Bison errors for nine unearned runs to win the Central Penn League scholastic baseball game 11-6 at the Don Womer Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon.
Jarrin Campman stroked three hits, one a double, while Parker Herrington, Tanner St. Clair, Aaron Sayers and Derek Danver each had two for the Bisons, who fell to 0-2 in the CPL and 0-4 overall.
\”Jarrin hasn\’t been hitting, but he broke out of it,\” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. \”We hit the ball, but the story of the game was another 10 men left on base and nine unearned runs.
\”You can\’t give a team like that too many outs. We\’ve got to make every play to stay with them, and we didn\’t do that.\”
Kody Bennett belted a single and two doubles and drove in a pair of runs for the Mounties (4-2, 2-1). They got two hits from Matt Curtis and Tim Gray.
A Clearfield misplay opened the gates for P-O in the first inning, and Luke Curtis\’ RBI-groundout and Bennett\’s two-run double staked J.D. Mason to a 3-0 lead. Another Bison miscue gave the Mounties a run in the second inning after Zack Czap had picked up an RBI, making it 5-0.
A walk and hits by Herrington and Campman got the Bisons on the board in the third, only to have the Mounties answer with three more tallies in the bottom of the frame. Colton Harris had a two-run triple, but two errors made it a long inning for loser Michael Moyer, who struck out five and walked only two while giving up eight hits before being relieved by Corey Bookhamer in the fourth.
\”We\’ve got to shore up our defense,\” Lansberry said. \”When we have a chance for an out, we\’ve got to make it.\”
In the fifth, Moyer had a run-scoring groundout and Danver followed with an RBI-single.
However, the Mounties retaliated again with a three-spot, two runs courtesy of a single by Matt Curtis.
St. Clair tripled and scored on Sayers\’ double in the fifth and drove in a run with a single in the fifth.
Mason went the distance for the Mounties, striking out seven and walking two for his second CPL win.
The Bisons will travel to Lewistown for a CPL game Thursday and finally get their home schedule launched with a non-league double-header Saturday against Westmont Hilltop at noon and Brookville at 3 p.m.
