Coudersport Boys Suffer First Loss of the Season in PIAA A Quartfinals

CLARION – Coudersport\’s undefeated boys, the last District 9 team alive in the 2008 PIAA Basketball Playoffs, couldn\’t hang with District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic of Sharon in the second half and saw their season end in a 58-43 Class A quarterfinal 58-43 loss Sunday evening in Clarion University\’s Tippin Gym.

The Falcons (29-1) were ahead 12-10 at the first-period buzzer and last led 22-19 , but the Golden Eagles (20-9) scored the final five points of the half and eight of the first nine points in the third quarter to take command at 45-33.

Free throw shooting was a key for Kennedy Catholic, a 66 percent shooting team that hit 21 of 25 shots from the foul line. Kyle Randall, a junior point guard reportedly with NCAA Division I potential, nailed 13 of 16 foul shots and had a game-high 19 points.

Blair Heimel topped Coudersport with 15 points.

Falcon fans always will wonder how much further their team could have gone had not 6-3 senior John Hau not suffered an ACL injury late in the regular season. He came back to play with a brace. But his action was limited, and he was not nearly as effective as earlier when he teamed with the 6-6 Heimel to dominate inside against Coudersport opponents.
