HERSHEY, Pa. – Wrestlers who have made a previous appearance in the PIAA Championships usually have an advantage over one competing in the Giant Center for the first time, but that was not the case for Curwensville 112-pounder Derek Brothers in the Class AA first round Thursday morning.
The Golden Tide sophomore, who placed eighth at 103 last year, was hit with four cautions which gave Burrell freshman Jeremy Landowski his points in a 2-0 upset.
Northwest Region champ Brothers (31-4) couldn\’t get off the bottom in the second period to go to the final two minutes in a scoreless bout.
However, he was hit with his third caution before the start of the third period to fall behind 1-0. Brothers controlled Landowski (36-12) the entire period but was unable to turn the Southwest Region fifth placer who finished third in District 7.
Another caution call against Brothers midway through the period set the final score.
Brothers will wrestle again in the afternoon against Hamburg freshman Derek Goodwin (39-10) in the first round of consolations. Goodwin, the third place finisher in the Southeast Region, lost 4-1 to Northeast Region runner-up Brock Waughen (34-4) of Milton.
