Altoona — Two Clearfield Bisons are a win away from qualifying for the state championships in Hershey next week.
At 125 pounds, Junior Holden Lowe held on to beat Bald Eagle Area senior Corey Gates 6-5 in a preliminary bout. Lowe then went on to beat the District 8 Champion from Langley, Antonio Kirk 7-3.
Lowe will take his 27-9 mark in to the semis against Bellefonte\’s Addison Snyder (34-7). The winner will advance to Saturday night\’s finals to face either Chad Frankhouser of Indian Valley or Kasey Davis of Meadville.
Joining Lowe in the semi-finals is heavyweight Sean Owen (35-1), who posted a 15-4 major decision over Travis Chappell of Titusville (31-4). Owen will face rival Mike Horton (30-5) of Philipsburg in the semis.
The Owen-Horton winner will face off with BEA\’s Tim Watson (30-4) or Conneaut Lake\’s Kris Tursky (31-4).
Heading into the first round of consolations, the Bisons are in 8th place in the team race.
Other Bisons to win preliminary bouts:
103 pounder Kodie Lowder picked up a fall in 2:58 over State College\’s Chris Barksdale.
119 pounder Andrew Spicer held off Erie Prep\’s Chris Hess 6-5.
Freshman 140 pounder Derek Danver was awarded an injury default victory after Curtis DeLattre of Warren was unable to finish.
171 pounder Lee Zalno pinned Perry\’s Steve Shaw in 2:51.
The above listed Bisons and Richie Queen, Kasey Casher, Shawn Hall, Andre Buck, and Mike Hill are alive heading into Friday night\’s consy round. All could come back to place third and qualify for Hershey.
