Golden Tide\’s Brothers Wins 9-AA Gold Medal

CLARION – A gold medal performance by sophomore 112-pounder Derek Brothers was the lone bright spot for the Curwensville Area High School wrestling team at the District 9 Class AA Championships in Clarion University\’s Waldo S. Tippin Gym Friday and Saturday.

Brothers, one of 11 No. 1 seeds to claim titles, breezed into the finals by pinning Coudersport\’s Justin Barentine in 1:56 and Brookville\’s Ron Clark in 2:24 and besting fourth seed Ian Grecco of Brockway 6-1.

Second-seeded Trevor McCauley of Redbank Valley proved to be a more worthy opponent by effectively countering Brothers in the neutral position and matching escapes with the Golden Tide bantam to set up the only overtime championship match.

\”Derek definitely was the aggressor,\” Curwensville coach Duane Wriglesworth II said. \”He was very close to takedowns several times, but McCauley was very good at countering. A couple of times at the edge of the mat, Derek had a single up high, but McCauley was able to whizzer and get off the mat.

\”I was surprised Derek gave up the escape to McCauley rather quickly. I thought he\’d be able to secure some back points.\”

In overtime, Brothers (28-3) escaped in the second period and then rode McCauley (30-8) in the final 30-second period for a 2-1 victory.

Brothers will be one of the returning champions in the Northwest Region Tournament this weekend. After losing to Ridgway\’s Garet Pisani in the district title bout, Brothers avenged that loss for the region crown and went on to place eighth in the state tourney.

He will be the only Golden Tide matman going to Sharon, though, as seven of his teammates bowed out in the consolation semifinals.

Third seeds Tyler Peters at 119 and Jeff Thomas at 145, fourth seed Justin Johnston at 140, sixth seed Jarrett Sloppy at 171, eighth seed Nathan Russell at 215 and Greg Koptchak at 103 and Brett Sutika at 125 all fell one win short of the medal round. Sutika had battled back after losing to eventual champ Tim Hubbard of Smethport in the preliminaries.

\”We had a good feeling about Derek, and we had hoped we\’d bring a couple more (medal winners) with him, but it just didn\’t happen,\” Wriglesworth said. \”Things just didn\’t go well for us Saturday. We were in shock, because we had wrestled well in all of the tournaments this year.\”

Peters, Johnston and Thomas were unable to bounce back after losing in the championship semifinals.

Peters just missed joining Brothers in the finals, losing a 4-3 decision to Kevin Shunk of Smethport.

Johnston and Thomas lost to the eventual champions. Smethport standout Jon-Marc Burdick won by technical fall over Johnston, while Brookville\’s Steve Zimmerman downed Thomas 5-2.

Thomas toughed it out against Zimmerman after being taken down hard to the mat and had to default against Port Allegany\’s Adam Greenman after landing hard again. Wriglesworth noted Thomas was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure and was released.

Seniors Johnston and Brett McCracken, who bowed out in the consolation quarterfinals at 152, and juniors Thomas and Russell finished the season with 20-plus wins. Russell had falls in 27 and 30 seconds to improve on his eighth seed.

\”I felt bad for Brett,\” Wriglesworth said. \”He\’s a senior and had some back trouble that would keep most kids from wrestling. There were times he couldn\’t bend over to put on his anklet.\”

Curwensville wound up tied for eighth with Keystone.

Led by champions Tyler McCauley at 103, Jonathan Brothers at 160 and Logan Shirey at 171, Redbank Valley amassed 184.5 points to edge favored Ridgway (178.5) for the team title.

Brothers was selected for the Outstanding Wrestler Award after winning his second district crown, and the Bulldogs\’ Mike Kundick was named Coach of the Year.

Pisani (119) and Jerico Weitzel (189) were Ridgway\’s champions.

Port Allegany 130-pounder Nick Nichols, who became District 9\’s all-time winningest wrestler earlier this season, earned his third title.

Nichols (43-0), Weitzel (25-0) and Coudersport 152-pounder Dirk Cowburn (31-0) remained undefeated.

The only champs who were seeded No. 1 were Zimmerman, Shirey and Ridgway heavyweight Joe Chittester, and they were second seeds.
