Curwensville Golden Tide Knock Off Mo Valley 60-47

HOUTZDALE—-The Curwensville Golden Tide boys played one of their most complete games of the season Monday night in beating Moshannon Valley on the Black Knights home court. With the 60-47 victory the Tide move to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the Moshannon Valley League (MVL). The Black Knights, coached by Darin Ricciotti , drop to 2-8 and 2-2 in the MVL.

The Knights actually had an 8 to 4 early first period lead only to see the Tide go on an 11-0 run. That run helped Curwensville jump out to a 17-12 margin after the first eight minutes. Curwensville’s Joey Palmer fueled the first period with 6 points. All five Tide starters plus reserve Sam Gardner put points on the board in the opening frame.

The Tide, under head coach Matt Wassil, kept it going with a 19-10 edge in the second to go up by a commanding 36-22 half-time lead. David Kalgren picked up 9 points in the quarter and ended the half with 13.

Balanced scoring, a smothering defense and some good work on the boards continued for the visiting Golden Tide in the second sixteen minutes. They were never seriously challenged by Mo Valley in the last two quarters despite the Knights playing aggressively and hustling the entire game.

Tom Rowley paced the Black Knights with 17 while Justin Dudurich chipped in with 13. The Tide had three players in double digits with Kalgren having 17, Derek Dixon 16 and Palmer 14. Dixon also played a huge under the basket on both ends with some tough, timely rebounding.

Wassil is now 5-0 all-time against Mo Valley in his three years at the helm for Curwensville who next play Ridgway at home on Wednesday. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity game to immediately follow.

The Tide Junior Varsity also won over the Black Knights, 38-29
