CLEARFIELD – Ghouls and goblins will take over the night. But even scary creatures need to be safe and celebrate Halloween right. Halloween’s greatest hazards aren’t vampires and villains, but falls, costume mishaps and automobile collisions. The Red Cross wants your family to have a safe Halloween so we’re providing these tips once again.
• Map out your route and stick to it.
• Remember to bring your flashlights!
• Accept treats at the door, don’t go inside.
• Use face paint instead of masks, which will cover your eyes.
• Wear light-colored clothing to be seen in the dark! (And remember to use reflective tape, even on bikes, skateboards and brooms!)
• Stay on the sidewalks and not in the street.
• Look both ways before crossing the street! (And cross from the corner!)
• Use a glow stick instead of a candle in your jack-o-lantern.
• Be on the lookout for drivers in cars! (And don’t hide between parked vehicles).
• Stay off the lawn, and only visit homes with their porch lights turned on!
• Be cautious around strange animals, especially dogs.
• Have a grown-up inspect your candy when you’re done trick-or-treating.
• Do not eat anything until it has been inspected.
Have a Happy and safe Halloween.
The American Red Cross has been in California responding to the wildfires all week. As of Thursday night, there have been 26 Shelters opened with over 15,000 overnight stays. Over 89,000 meals and snacks have been served by nearly 4,000 Red Cross Volunteers. An additional 3,100 workers have been trained to help provide food, shelter and comfort items. Comfort kits, rakes, shovels, work gloves, trash bags, and dust masks have been distributed.
Clearfield-Jefferson Red Cross has deployed 3 responders and a total of 92 Pennsylvania residents are on assignment.
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the California wildfires, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster please do so at the time of your donation. Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the Clearfield-Jefferson American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting here.
Just a few years ago, measles killed nearly 4,000 of Madagascar’s children every year. Tragically measles takes the lives of approximately 345,000 children worldwide each year, and malaria kills more than 1 million, mostly in Africa.
Although the needs are enormous, we are reminded that there are only two options: curse the darkness or light a candle. The American Red Cross, along with many other humanitarian partners, will light a candle this week as we continue our noble work to raise awareness and mobilize resources to strengthen the health of the children of Madagascar.
Beginning October 22 and running through October 30, the government of Madagascar, with support from a coalition of world health partners such as the American Red Cross, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Foundation and nearly 20 other international agencies will launch its measles and malaria prevention campaign. This health and education campaign will provide 2.8 million measles vaccines and 1.5 million insecticide- treated bed nets to the children of Madagascar.
The American Red Cross is committed to helping protect children against preventable diseases in Africa and other at-risk areas. By working with our partners in the Measles Initiative, as well as the President’s Malaria Initiative, Malaria No More, and others, we are making a significant difference in the lives of Africa’s children.
If you would like more information on the Measles Initiative, please contact the Red Cross office.
