CURWENSVILLE – One case of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA has been confirmed at the Curwensville Area High School.
District Superintendent Norman Hatten said that one case has been confirmed and that the district informed students, parents and district employees. Hatten said the district has been in contact with the Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control.
Hatten added that the school is using hospital-strength sanitizer to disinfect on a daily basis. In the letter home to parents, Hatten said that the district is taking an aggressive approach to further ensure the health and welfare of its students. The letter stated that by Wednesday evening students will have removed all clothing and towels from locker rooms. Parents and guardians were asked to launder them and continue to do so regularly in the future.
Hatten also stated that the locker rooms would be “fogged” with an additional disinfectant so the locker rooms would be available for use.
According to the Department of Health, treatment for the disease involves a different type of antibiotic, although the treatment is not given until the results of lab tests are known.
“We’re continuing to promote good hygiene practices,” said Hatten. “That’s one of the strongest recommendations.”
Hatten said the district is carefully monitoring the situation.
