DUBOIS – A man accused of leaving animals behind after he moved out of a DuBois rental home waived all charges to court Friday.
Robert L. Reinard, 57, allegedly moved out of a home on DuBois’ East Long Avenue in August. DuBois City Police were dispatched to the home Aug. 18 for a report of dead cats in the building.
When officers arrived, they saw a black and white dog that was very skinny. Police also reported the smell of dead animals and feces inside the home.
Court records describe urine on the floor and a full kitty litter box.
Police entered a room in the rental and discovered carcases of cats, bones of dead cats and empty food and water dishes.
The court documents stated, “It was believed that some of these cats have been dead for a long time in this room.”
When police interviewed Reinard, he allegedly reported that there were three big cats in the home and three to five small cats. He also told authorities that he locked all of the cats in one room so they could not run through the house.
Reinard said he moved out because his landlord was not fixing problems in the home, and left the animals behind. He reportedly admitted to stopping at the home and seeing that some of the cats were dead. He also said that he had not fed any of the cats or the dog in a long time.
Police and representatives from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found six dead cats, two live cats and one live dog in the home.
Reinard faces charges of cruelty to animals.
He is free on unsecured bail.
