SOMERSET – State Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., and state and local officials dedicated a portion of Route 219 in Somerset County in honor of the heroes of Flight 93 on Thursday.
“The heroism of the victims of Flight 93 is something we want to always remember,” Biehler said. “From today forward, Route 219 will be known as Flight 93 Memorial Highway. Everyone who travels this route will never forget the bravery and unselfishness of those on the flight.”
Flight 93 Memorial Highway serves as a reminder of the heroic efforts of the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, which was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, when it was hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001. It should also serve as a reminder of the compassion of the emergency service personnel who responded to the crash.
PennDOT installed four signs along the route designating the route as Flight 93 Memorial Highway. The signs were officially unveiled today.
Biehler was joined by state Sen. Richard Kasunic, who sponsored the legislation to rename the highway, and Kenny Nacke, whose brother was a passenger on Flight 93.
Also participating in the ceremony were members of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department, as well as other local community leaders and the National Park Service.
