BROOKVILLE – Shutout pitching and key hits by relief hurlers Michael Moyer and Corey Bookhamer in the final three innings enabled Clearfield to continue its second half surge in the Jefferson County Legion Baseball League with a come-from-behind, 7-6 win over Brookville under the McKinley Field lights Sunday night.
By boosting their JCLL record to 8-6 with four consecutive wins, the Chiefs have joined the battle with DuBois (7-6 before weekend action) and Brookville (7-7) for second place and home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
With starter Adam Jury\’s pitch count mounting and his team trailing 6-1 in the first of seven games in 10 days, Manager Sid Lansberry went to his bullpen in the fifth inning.
Moyer responded with one hitless inning and then belted a two-run double to highlight a four-run rally in the sixth that made it a one-run game.
Lansberry then called on Bookhamer, who worked two hitless frames and also came through with a double in the top of the seventh for the game-winning hit.
Bookhamer leads the Chiefs\’ staff with five victories in eight decisions.
Both teams scored in the first inning, Clearfield on Derek Danver\’s single after James Zimmermann reached second when his fly ball was dropped.
Gabe Wonderling single and two walks loaded the bases for Brookville. A run-scoring single by Jeremy Aharrah, a sacrifice fly by Jacob Means and a forceout by Greg Sobol made it 3-1.
The hosts widened their lead on Tyler Ross\’ sacrifice fly in the second and Means\’ two-run double in the third.
Means carried a three-hitter into the sixth, when Danver singled with one out and Aaron Sayers and Justin Hoffman walked.
Dan Hetrick relieved and quickly got the second out, but Moyer delivered his clutch double for two RBIs. After David Ryan walked, a throwing error on Zimmermann\’s grounder gave Clearfield a pair of unearned runs.
In the seventh, the Chiefs got a break when Danver\’s one-out fly ball was dropped, and they capitalized. Sayers singled to tie the score. Hoffman also singled before Bookhamer sliced a double to left field for the deciding run.
A hamstring injury that prevents Jury from batting and running did not affect his ability to pitch, and the hard-throwing righthander gave the Chiefs valuable innings on the mound, giving up only four hits while striking out five and walking five.
Counting their three victories in the Clearfield Legion Independence Day Tournament, the Chiefs have won seven games in a row for a 15-7-1 record.
They face a tough stretch with games at Punxsutawney tonight at 8 \’clock, home against DuBois Wednesday, at DuBois Thursday, home against Reynoldsville Saturday at 5 p.m., at Brookville Sunday at 2 p.m. and at Curwensville Tuesday for their regular-season finale, which was moved from Monday.
