Clearfield Babe Ruth 14 Stars Nipped 12-11 in Tourney Opener

STATE COLLEGE – Clearfield outhit Potter/McKean 16-9 but stranded 12 runners and wound up on the short end of a 12-11 decision in the opening game of the Pennsylvania Babe Ruth District 8 Prep 14-Year-Old Baseball Tournament at the State College Teener League Field Friday evening.

Ethan Gillespie whacked a three-run double, his third hit, in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to an extra inning.

However, Potter/McKean came up with a run in the top of the eighth for the win.

Clearfield, which had led 5-0 after three innings, got the tying and winning runs on base with no outs in the bottom of the eighth but failed to score.

Jonathan Palumbo, Shane Harper and Jason Bowman also had three hits apiece for manager Gary Knepp Sr.\’s team. Tyler Knepp and Trevor Flanagan each had two safeties.

Flanagan, Curtis Frye and Bowman shared the pitching chores for Clearfield. Bowman was tagged with the loss though allowing only two runs and three hits over the last 2-1/3 innings.

Clearfield will be back in action today at approximately noon against the loser of the State College-(Williamsport) West End game that will be resumed at 11 a.m. with the score 5-5. The game was suspended Friday night because of a curfew.

The winner of the noon game will move to the elimination bracket semifinal against the loser of the 2 p.m. game between Potter/McKean and the State College-West End winner.

The championship game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. If another game is necessary, it will start at 4.
