Chiefs Win Own Independence Day Tourney

HYDE – The Clearfield Chiefs were rude hosts for the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 Independence Day Baseball Tournament, sweeping the Clearfield Babe Ruth League All-Stars 13-3 and the Bradford Legion 14-2 on Saturday and outlasting St. Marys 12-8 Sunday at the Bison Sports Complex.
 
St. Marys (16-4) finished 2-1 with wins over the Clearfield Babe Ruth League All-Stars 11-10 on Saturday and Bradford 11-6 on Sunday. Bradford (9-10) doubled up the Clearfield Babe Ruth League All-Stars 16-8 in Sunday\’s first game. 
 
In the all-Clearfield tourney opener, Kyle Kline and Wil Bacharach drove in two runs apiece, while Adam Jury and Aaron Sayers each had two hits as the Chiefs downed the All-Stars in five innings.
 
Winner David Welker pitched a seven-hitter in his first start of the season, striking out two and walking two.
 
Losing hurler Justin Hoffman and Isaac Butler had pairs of hits for the Babe Ruth League All-Stars. One of Hoffman\’s was a double.
 
Jury and Kline were the big guns for the Clearfield Legion (12-7-1) against Bradford in a game that went only 4-1/2 innings. Jury had three singles and four RBIs. Kline also had three hits, one a double, and two RBIs. Jarrin Campman chipped in with a pair of singles.
 
James Zimmermann, who has recorded three saves, also got his first start and responded with a four-hitter. He struck out four and walked two.
 
Evan Kline cracked a leadoff home run for Bradford.
 
The finale of the round-robin tourney turned out to be the championship game, and Zimmermann starred with his bat for the Chiefs. He belted two home runs and a double to pace a 14-hit attack and drove in four runs.
 
Jury, Campman and Derek Danver singled and doubled, Kline had two singles and Welker drove in two runs for Clearfield.
 
The Chiefs broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the fifth inning and tacked on two more runs in the sixth and four in the seventh that provided the winning margin against St. Marys.
 
Brandon Evans got the win in relief of Sayers, allowing three runs and three hits in three innings. The decision was his first for the Chiefs.
 
St. Marys was led by John Ackley\’s three singles, Nick Brennen\’s single and double and Lou Pisani\’s two singles. Brennen drove in two runs.
 
The Clearfield Legion swings back into Jefferson County Legion League play tonight at Reynoldsville. A home game with Curwensville is on tap Thursday.
