CLEARFIELD – Six opponents of the 2007 Clearfield Area High School baseball team will be playing Monday in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs, five of them qualifying as district champions.
In District 9, Punxsutawney (12-7) defeated the Bisons 4-0 on Nick Gillung\’s no-hitter for the Class AAA title and Brookville (19-4) reigned in Class AA. Coach Sid Lansberry\’s Bisons (8-13) beat Brookville 9-7 and lost twice to Punxsy.
Central Penn League teams swept the three biggest classes in District 6, State College (15-5) in Class AAA, surprising Lewistown (12-9) in AAA and Philipsburg-Osceola (13-9) in AA. Bald Eagle Area (17-6) was runner-up in AA.
Clearfield downed Lewistown 14-1 in 4-1/2 innings and lost to State College 7-6, P-O 14-0 in five and Bald Eagle Area 13-1 in 5. The Bisons led State 6-4 going to the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Little Lions rallied for the win to claim the CPL championship. A loss would have dropped them into a three-way tie for the title.
PIAA pairings pit State College against 7-2 Bethel Park (16-6) in AAAA, Punxsutawney against 7-1 West Allegheny (23-0) and Lewistown against 3-3 Greencastle-Antrim in AAA and P-O against 7-3 Riverview (13-6) and BEA against 7-1 North Catholic (15-9) in AA.
Four teams that the Clearfield softball team played will join the District 9 Class AAA champion Lady Bisons in the state tourney.
DuBois (16-5) won the Districts 9-10 Class AAAA subregional game 6-1 over Erie Strong Vincent (17-4) on Memorial Day. Leah Wallock (13-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine, and also had two hits, one a double, and drove in two runs.
The Lady Beavers eked out 3-2 and 5-4 wins over the Lady Bisons with seventh-inning comebacks.
Clearfield (11-9) owns wins over District 6 Class AAA champ Bellefonte (12-8) by 7-6 and District 9 Class A runner-up Elk County Catholic (17-6) by 13-3 in five innings but lost 3-2 to District 9 Class A champ Curwensville (21-2).
Bellefonte gets 3-3 qualifier Susquehannock (20-2) and ECC draws 10-1 Cambridge Springs.

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School baseball team won at home and lost on the road against two opponents that will be representing District 9 in the PIAA Playoffs.
Coach Ryan Briskar\’s Golden Tide (13-8) won 1-0 in nine innings and lost 8-1 against Class AA champ Brookville and won 7-3 and lost 7-6 against Class A third place Elk County Catholic (10-12), which gets District 7 champ Springdale (17-3).
Coach Allen Leigey\’s Lady Tide beat Class AAA champ Clearfield 3-2 and shut out Elk County Catholic twice, 9-0 during the regular season and then 7-0 in the Class A title game.
