Clearfield Chiefs Drop League Opener to Punxsy

HYDE – After failing to score in the first inning, Punxsutawney posted at least two runs during its next six-at bats to spoil Clearfield\’s opener 20-12 in Jefferson County Legion League baseball action Monday evening at the Bison Sports Complex.
With an eye on Wednesday\’s District 9 Class AAA championship game involving most the same players, both managers checked out their pitching depth. The result was 30 hits and 14 walks.
Clearfield also committed eight errors in falling to 2-1 overall.
Jarrin Campman belted a three-run homer in the first inning for the Chiefs, who claimed the lead for the last time with three more runs in the second. Adam Jury\’s two-run homer tied the score, and Brandon Evans\’ sacrifice fly made it 6-5.
Jury\’s RBI-single got Clearfield even at 7-7 in the lower third before Punxsy went in front to stay with four runs in the fourth.
Jury singled across two runs in the fifth inning, when the Chiefs pulled to within one run, 13-12, but the visitors pulled away with four in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Punxsy\’s big guns were Dustin Dubensky with a double, a homer and four RBIs, Jacob Stump with a single, a double and three ribbies and Chris Reeseman with two singles, a homer and three runs bated in. Alex Cressley also had three safeties.
Stump, the third Punxsy pitcher, shut out the hosts over the last 2-2/3 innings to earn the win.
For Clearfield, Jury had three hits and five RBIs, while Evans and Campman had two hits apiece.
Corey Bookhamer, the first of three hurlers called on by manager Sid Lansberry, was tagged with the loss. Tanner St. Clair and James Zimmerman also pitched. Half of the runs they allowed were unearned.
The Chiefs will travel to DuBois Thursday for a 6 p.m. JCL game at Showers Field.
