D9 \"A\" Softball Playoffs: Lady Tide Advance with 8-0 Win Over DCC

CURWENSVILLE—-The Curwensville girls softball team won it’s quarter finals contest with DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) Wednesday afternoon by an 8-0 score. Curwensville, seeded third, will now advance to the District 9 Class A semi-finals next Tuesday against Smethport, the number two seed, at a site and time to be determined. It was the third straight shutout over DCC this season. The Lady Tide won both regular season games 4-0 and 6-0. Curwensville now has a 19-2 record for 2007.

Once again, sophomore pitcher Holly Lansberry slammed the door on the Lady Cardinals allowing only 1 hit to lead off hitter Beth Pernesky in the top of the first. The Tide hurler struck out 12 and is now a sparkling 17-2 on the season.

The game was very tight, with the Lady Tide only up 1-0 after three. Then Curwensville scored one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in sixth to pull away with the \”W\”. Shannon McDonald and Ronna Knepp each had two hits for the Tide. They also had the two doubles for Curwensville while Samantha Haney stroked a triple.

Head coach Allen Leigey said afterwards that, “We played a very solid game all the way around. Lansberry was just brilliant in tossing a one hitter that could have easily been a no-hitter. Struble had a very fine game defensively at shortstop, making some nice grabs.

In other District 9 Class A action, number one seed Rocky Grove was beaten by Brockway 4-1 while Elk County Catholic defeated Coudersport 6-4. Those two will meet in the other semi-final game also on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined. As mentioned, Curwensville will play against the number two seed, Smethport, who beat Clarion 9-0 to advance. Smethport is now 18-0 on the year.

Leigey said this about his next foe, “I feel we match up pretty good with Smethport. They are a very quality team and their record speaks for itself. The team that gets the breaks should come out on top. If we play like we are capable of, then we will be fine.”
