CLEARFIELD – Two men found guilty by a jury for transporting drugs through Clearfield County were sentenced to state prison on Tuesday.
Hugo Leal Flores of Mexico and Arnulfo Uresti of Texas were both sentenced to five-to-ten years in state prison for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The men were involved in a three day trial after they were arrested in October and found to be in possession of 28 kilograms of cocaine.
F. Cortez “Chip” Bell III asked presiding Judge Paul E. Cherry to sentence the men to lengthy periods of incarceration to send a message to drug traffickers that their conduct would be prosecuted if they were caught. Giovanni Campbell, counsel for Flores, and Steve Jarrett, counsel for Uresti both asked the judge to sentence within the guidelines. Jarrett also asked the judge to sentence his client to only the mandatory minimum.
Cherry said he would sentence the men within the guidelines.
The attorneys for both men acknowledged that their clients would likely be deported after they were released from prison.
