CPL Leading Mounties Shut Out Bisons 14-0

HYDE – Philipsburg-Osceola pounded 14 hits off three of Clearfield\’s four pitchers and Mike Supko hurled a six-hitter as the new Central Penn League front-runners defeated Clearfield 14-0 in scholastic baseball action at the Bison Sports Complex Friday afternoon.

It didn\’t take long for obviously-disappointed Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry to sum up his team\’s seventh loss in 13 games.

\”Supko pitched exceptionally well, and they hit everything we threw,\” he said. \”That\’s the bottom line.\”

Freshman catcher Zack Czap paced the Mountie attack against loser Andrew Janocko, Brandon Evans and Michael Moyer with three hits and was involved in all three rallies. A.J. Czap, J.D. Mason and Clint Mills rapped two hits apiece and combined for seven runs batted in. Five Mounties clubbed doubles.

\”They hit the ball in the gaps, and they hit the ball hard up the middle,\” Lansberry said. \”They hit all of our pitchers.\”

Meanwhile, the Bisons had only one runner reach third base though they had two runners aboard in three innings against Supko, whose shutout was highlighted by seven strikeouts, five coming on called third strikes.

\”You\’ve gotta give him credit,\” Lansberry praised the senior righthander. \”He mixed his pitches well. We took a lot of called third strikes I thought we should have been swinging at. He must have four pitches. He looked like he was throwing a curve ball, a slider and some type of change. And he threw a lot of them for strikes.\”

The second inning set the tone. The Mounties, 5-1 in the CPL and 7-5 overall with their third win in a row after struggling early in the season, rocked the Bisons with the first of their two five-run salvos and Supko chalked up three strikeouts.

Following a single by Mills and a walk to Ben Maurer, Supko drove in the only run he would need with a double to right center.
Tim Gray singled through the box for two RBIs. Zack Czap lined a double to left center to make it 4-0. And Mason capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to left.

\”It\’s pretty tough whenever they get five in the inning and he comes back and strikes out the side,\” Lansberry said. \”That\’s pretty demoralizing.\”

Like Janocko, Evans was able to quiet the Mounties for one inning. Then, in the fourth, P-O strung together six consecutive hits to hike its lead to 9-0. The big blow was a two-run single by Mills. Matt Curtis and Mason also drove in runs.

Moyer relieved and worked out of a two-on, no-out situation, but he encountered problems in the fifth. A hit, an error and a walk loaded the bases for A.J. Czap, who promptly cleared them with a double off the fence in right center. Pinch-hitter Storm Bumbarger doubled to the base of the fence in right for another run and scored the final run on Supko\’s groundout with James Zimmerman on the hill.

\”I can see why they\’re in contention for the CPL,\” Lansberry said. \”They play good defense, too. I know they lost some games early, but they always seem to come around and improve as the season goes along. It looks like that\’s what they are starting to do now.\”

P-O has the edge in percentage points over Bald Eagle Area atop the CPL. The Eagles are 7-3 after losing 5-3 at Williamsport Friday.

Zimmerman had two hits, one a double, for the Bisons, who are 2-6 in the league.

Next week, the Bisons have home games with Hollidaysburg Tuesday and Somerset Friday sandwiching a trip to DuBois Wednesday.

Clearfield\’s junior varsity upped its record to 9-2 with a 9-7 win over P-O. Parker Herrington, Josh Rippey and Alex Billotte had two hits apiece. Herrington and Corey Bookhamer had doubles. Bookhamer pitched six innings to earn the win. Herrington worked the seventh.
