PUNXSUTAWNEY—-When you play the defending PIAA AAA state runner-up you expect and know they have a quality program. That’s exactly what the Curwensville softball team faced Wednesday afternoon as Punxsutawney edged the Lady Tide 2-0 in a quality pitcher’s duel involving two very good squads.
Curwensville had won three straight, all by way of the shutout, and now stands at 9-2 on the year. The Lady Tide are back in action this afternoon at 4:15 in DuBois when they face DuBois Central Catholic.
Holly Lansberry, sophomore Tide hurler, had two of the three hits for Curwensville while Samantha Haney had the other. Lady Chucks pitcher Brooke Callen struck out 6 Tide hitters and did not issue a walk. The only blunder by Callen was when she hit Curwensville’s Kristi Newpher in the top of the seventh in the left elbow. Newpher left the game and her status for today’s game is questionable.
Punxsutawney was driven by right fielder Noel Janocha who went two for three on the day with a double and then a solo home run in the fourth inning when the Lady Chucks scored both of their runs. The Chucks had six hits that were very well scattered by Lansberry but they did however pick up three walks against the Tide pitching machine.
Head coach Allen Leigey said of his Tide, “We had our chances but when you play up against the defending AAA state runner-up it can be very difficult. I was very pleased with our overall effort and heads up play all day long. This is one of those losses that will certainly help us over the long haul because we played a good team pretty much dead even.”
