ST. MARY’S—-Yep! You guessed it. The Curwensville Golden Tide were involved in another one run ball game Monday afternoon, their third straight and seventh in ten games this season. However, the Tide came up short losing to Elk County Catholic (ECC) by a 7-6 margin. It was a six run fourth inning for ECC that did in Ryan Briskar and his squad. The loss leaves Curwensville with a 7-3 record for 2007. In one run games Curwensville is now 4-3.
The Tide did jump out to a 4-0 lead after 2 and ½ innings but then Elk County Catholic started to put their offense together by scoring one in the bottom of the third and 6 runs in a nightmare fourth on defense for Curwensville. The Tide could have been out of the nightmare fourth had they turned a double play, but it was not to be. Two errors and a mental mistake pretty much doomed the Tide in that half inning of defense and coach Briskar pointed it out saying, “ We just simply fell asleep in the fourth inning on defense with those two physical errors and one mental mistake. It is difficult to win when that happens and your opponent scores 6 runs.”
The big blow after all the mistakes was a three run home run by Elk County’s pitcher Nick Brennen. Curwensville would add one run in both the fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t push across anymore as Brennen went the distance for ECC to pick up the win.
Coach Briskar did point out some positives in the tough defeat stating, “ A couple of bright spots is Brett McCracken’s hitting. Brett was three for four on the day and is a key part of our offense. Also, Erik Martell is doing a real nice job for us coming in as a relief pitcher lately. Erik shut down Elk County for the final 2 1/3 innings, which kept us in the ball game with a chance to win.”
The Tide are right back at it Tuesday afternoon as they host the Glendale Vikings at 4 pm. And yes, you guessed it again ! Curwensville beat Glendale just last Thursday in a one run game, 9-8 !
