DUBOIS – If you’re traveling through DuBois, Sandy Township or Falls Creek Borough and you suddenly spy something blue, it’s likely the newest addition to mass transit in Clearfield County.
On Tuesday, DuFAST Transit rolled out a new blue bus complete withreflective orange and yellow details on the side.
“This is a whole new image for DuFAST,” said Kristen Vida, executive director of DuFAST.
The new bus was unveiled Tuesday to those who are most familiar with them — the riders.
They got the first peek at the new look, which will be used to replace one currently in the fleet. An identical bus is on its way to DuBois from California. Two shorter versions will be put into service in July or August.
For Vida, though, the new buses are about more than a new look or upgrading equipment.
“It enhances the quality of life, providing a safe and reliable form of public transportation.”
Some of the about 5,000 passengers DuFAST transports within its coverage area were on hand to see the new bus.
“I think it was well-needed,” said Joe Wilson. “I surely appreciate having buses.”
Wilson added that he thinks the service provides a good schedule, offering transportation through the week from the morning through the evening as well as weekend service.
Jean Palmerino was also impressed with the new bus.
“I think it was awesome … very nice,” she said. “I can’t wait to get a ride on it.”
Palmerino did not have to wait long as soon after the ribbon was cut in front of the new bus, it was scheduled to take its first trip on the mall/plaza route. Riders also got a gift for the unveiling — free rides all day.
Dorothy Busatto has driven DuFAST buses for 14 years, and she was providing information about the new bus, showing off amenities such as seats that flip up for wheelchair users. She added that she got a chance to test-drive the bus, saying it drives nicely.
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “We’re hoping this encourages ridership.”
Busatto said that task might be made easier thanks to the eye-catching design of the bus.
“It stands out! It’s big and it’s blue!”
