CURWENSVILLE—-It was the first day of trout season in Pennsylvania and Curwensville sophomore Ben McGary had visiting Brookville hooked all afternoon Saturday. The southpaw went 9 innings giving up just three cheap singles while striking out 9 as Curwensville knocked off previously undefeated Brookville 1-0 by pushing a run across in the bottom of the ninth with one out on a bases loaded walk to Justin McGary.
McGary (Ben) retired the Raiders in order through the first four innings, striking out 6 in the process. The first Brookville batter to reach base was Greg Sobel to lead off the top of fifth. Sobel was awarded first base and a single when he made contact with the ball while hitting the catchers glove at the same time which was ruled catchers interference. Even with the no-hitter gone, McGary stayed poised, giving up only two more hits, a bloop in the sixth and a infield hit in the seventh. His off speed pitches kept the Raiders off balance all afternoon. The only real threat for Brookville came in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out. McGary then promptly struck out pinch hitter Nate Bishop and got lead off hitter Gabe Wonderling to ground out to second.
Tide head coach was in awe of the performance his hurler put forth saying, “ Ben McGary was absolutely stunning in going 9 innings for a sophomore. He threw 113 pitches and still had great control at the end.”
Brookville starting pitcher Jacob Means also pitched very well in allowing only 3 hits and striking out 6 in his seven innings of work. The Tide left two on base in the first and again in the second but that was as close as they came to scoring against the right hander. Curwensville runners only got as far as second before Means would shut them down.
Means gave way to Dan Hetrick in the eighth who ended up walking in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Joe Bloom lead off the ninth with a single up the middle then took second as the centerfielder bobbled the ball. After pinch hitter Nate McGary was called out on strikes and Brett McCracken drew a walk. With Tide runners on first and second Cory Bloom hit a sharp grounder to second, which was misplayed, loading the bases for Curwensville. Justin McGary then walked on a 3-1 pitch to send Joe Bloom home with the winning tally. Bloom lead the Tide with two of their four hits.
It was without question the biggest win of his coaching career for first year coach Briskar as he stated, “ Brookville has a great program and I knew it would be a battle to pull one out against a quality team like they are. I am so proud of how our kids hung in there, fighting so hard for a huge win.”
Brookville is now 4-1 under head coach Korry Lindemuth while Curwensville also is 4-1 on the season. The Golden Tide next play at Glendale on Monday, weather permitting, at 4 pm.
