CLEARFIELD – A former chief of police for Clearfield Borough died Thursday in Pittsburgh.
Judd C. Zimmer, 60, retired in November 2004 after serving as chief for 11 years and on the Clearfield Borough police force for 35 years.
Zimmer died Thursday morning at Sewickley Valley Hospital in Pittsburgh as a result of complications that occurred during a recent surgery.
Services are scheduled for Monday afternoon for the Clearfield native.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Clearfield. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Zimmer began his career with Clearfield Borough Police as a part-time officer, moving through the ranks to become chief in 1993.
He had worked for the Lawrence Township Police Department from 1970-71 prior to joining the Clearfield Borough Police Department in 1971.
While serving with the department, he achieved numerous certificates in law enforcement training.
Zimmer was active with Clearfield County CrimeStoppers, serving as an adviser and as a board member.
At the time of his death, he was a member of several organizations including the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association and the Bald Eagle Fraternal Order of Police. He was also a past Exhalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 540.
Zimmer is survived by his wife, Rosemary (Hinchliffe) Zimmer, whom he married January 10, 1970; two daughters, Christine Davis and her husband, Andrew, and Catherine J. Zimmer and her fiance, Walter Holtsmaster Jr., all of Clearfield; and two grandchildren Madison Davis and Evan Judd Davis.
A viewing wil be held at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home at 312 E. Locust St., Clearfield, on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
The Clearfield Borough Police Department is planning to attend both the funeral and the viewing.
