Don’t Feed the Ducks in Clearfield Borough

CLEARFIELD – Before you feed the ducks in Clearfield Borough, read this.

At the request of Clearfield Borough Mayor Patty Gilliland, residents and visitors to the area are no longer permitted to feed the ducks in Upper and Lower Witmer Parks and near West Side Distributing.

“I know a lot of people like to feed those ducks and take their kids to feed the ducks, but they’re becoming a problem,” Gilliland said to borough council Thursday night.

She cited the fact that the ducks contribute to health problems, and their numbers are growing exponentially.

“We’re getting an overpopulation of ducks.”

The borough crew already had the needed signs on hand, and after a unanimous vote from council with First Ward Councilwoman Joan McMillen absent Thursday, the signs were put in place by Friday afternoon.

The borough still needs to check whether an ordinance is in place to prohibit the feeding of ducks, and until then, Clearfield Borough Police Chief Jeff Rhone said the department will use its discretion in citing offenders.
