Seven Bisons Place at Big Dog Tourney

Brockway — Seven Bison wrestlers made it to the medal stand en route to a three-way tie for a sixth place team finish at the Brockway Big Dog Tournament last night.

The Bisons were led by heavyweight Sean Owen, who came up short against Brookville\’s Eli Morres in the finals. Owen lost by a 5-1 decision.

\”The score was 3-1 with like seven seconds to go in the match,\” said head coach Jeff Aveni. \”Owen shot in and Morres spun behind him. He [Owen] wrestled an excellent match; he\’s the only kid to score on Morres this season.\”

Placing third for the Bisons were Anthony Moore and Nick Redden at 135 and 215, respectively. Moore  pulled out a 2-0 decision over Butler\’s Derek Hays while Redden needed only 2:22 to get the fall over Wyote Clinger of Brookville.

\”Nick Redden finally broke out; it was nice to see him get some wins,\” said Aveni. \”Nick went 5-0 the first day to finish 7-1 overall. He was disappointed and felt he should have won, but he still had a really good tournament.\”

At 130, Anthony Schultz lost a tight consolation bout to Aaron Raible of Butler. Raible defeated Schultz 2-1 in an overtime, tiebreaker.

Schultz finished fourth for the tournament.

Aveni was impressed with the performance by Schultz when he said, \”He  had a good tournament for us. I felt he hung in there and really battled through some tough matches.\”

The Bisons had two wrestlers upend their Saegertown opponents to place fifth.

At 112, Andrew Spicer won by injury default over Sam Higby while 189-pounder, Jacob Riglin posted a 5-1 decision over Kaleb Jones.

Kasey Casher placed sixth for the tournament at 171 pounds. Casher lost by fall in 1:58 to Matt Anthony of Port Allegany.

Overall, Aveni described his team\’s performance when he said, \”Team wise, we were up and down. Individually, we had some great performances, but, as a team, we were decent. Hopefully, we go up from here.\”
