Bellefonte — Last week when the Bisons headed down I-80 to face the Bellefonte Red Raiders, they ran into a snowstorm and never made it. No such luck this week.
The Bisons managed 3 wins on the night; a fall by Anthony Moore, a regular decision by Richie Queen, and a regular decision by Sean Owen.
The bout was not without controversy however. It seems some calls may have taken some fight out of the Bisons.
There was controversy at 140 & 145, starting with a cement mixer perfectly executed by Shawn Hall being declared illegal. Shawn had his opponent flat and would almost certainly have had the pin, if the ref had not stopped the match and awarded a penalty point to Alterio. Shawn put up a good scrappy fight the remainder of the match but was not able to recover from the setback.
Then at 145, the same thing happened to Richie Queen. He \”mixed\” Brandon Jones and had the match stopped and the move declared illegal. (In both instances, the coach disagreed as did quite a number of knowledgeable Clearfield fans who stated emphatically that both wrestlers had the hand or arm in addition to the head when they mixed their opponents.) After that incident, Richie lost a point for mildly shoving his opponent after they went off the mat. Richie also got a pin at the buzzer which the ref called back. The refs hand hit the mat as the buzzer rang. The ref had to mentally decide that the pin occurred & raise his hand before slapping the mat, thus, with his hand hitting the mat at the buzzer it seems clear that the pin occurred within the time limit. When the ref consulted with the table – they told him that his slap was simultaneous with the buzzer….but the ref called the pin back anyway and awarded 3 back points which gave the win to Richie but not the fall.
The Bisons open their home season on Tuesday December 19 when the Punxsy Chucks come to town.
There will be a moment of silence to honor the late Don Robb, a huge Bison wrestling supporter over the years.
