Campus Corner: Allegheny, Welker Shut Out No. 25-Ranked Team

WOOSTER, Ohio — Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Welker of Clearfield moved up to third place on the Allegheny College all-time list for shutouts in a season on Wednesday, and number seven was a big one as the Gators stunned The College of Wooster 3-0 to knock the Fighting Scots out of the North Coast Athletic Conference lead.

Wooster, No. 25 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III national rankings with a 12-4-1 record, was tops in the NCAC in points per game, but Welker stopped seven shots on goal to get her goals-against average back under one at .98. She also raised her saves percentage to 83.5.

For the season, Welker has 76 saves while allowing 15 goals. The Gators are 10-5 in games she has played. Already eliminated from the NCAC playoff chase, Allegheny is 10-7, including 3-4 in the conference, for its season finale Saturday at home against Wittenberg University, 12-3-2 overall and tied with Wooster for first place at 5-2-1.
