University Park, Pa. — The Penn State women\’s basketball team has announced its 2006-07 schedule. The slate once again features an exciting lineup, including six teams from last year’s final AP Top 25 poll.
\”Once again, I feel that we have put together a non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the tough Big Ten schedule and the NCAA Tournament,\” Lady Lion head coach Rene Portland said.
The Lady Lions are slated to face three Big Ten teams that finished in the Top 25, including Ohio State (No. 2), Purdue (No. 11) and Michigan State (No. 16). Penn State will travel to Duke, which finished the season ranked fourth in the AP poll, on Nov. 21 before taking on Rutgers (No. 9) at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Nov. 24. The Lady Lions will face either Arizona State (No. 15) or Western Kentucky (ARV) in the second round of the Thanksgiving weekend tourney.
Penn State will appear on television at least 10 times, including four appearances on Comcast SportsNet. The Comcast SportsNet games will include the Big Ten contests at Illinois (Dec. 28), vs. Ohio State (Jan. 11), vs. Iowa (Jan. 28) and at Michigan State (Feb. 1). WPSU-TV will air six games, beginning with the Lady Lions’ Nov. 16 match-up vs. Notre Dame. Penn State Public Broadcasting will also air Penn State’s match-ups with Old Dominion (Dec. 3), Michigan State (Jan. 25), Wisconsin (Feb. 4), Minnesota (Feb. 15) and Indiana (Feb. 25).
The Lady Lions open the season in Philadelphia against Drexel on Friday, Nov. 10 before returning home for a three-game set against Syracuse (Nov. 12), South Carolina (Nov. 14) and Notre Dame (Nov. 16). Additionally, Penn State will face Old Dominion (Dec. 3) and Xavier (Dec. 7) in non-conference action at the Bryce Jordan Center. PSU’s non-conference road schedule includes trips to Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 28, Pittsburgh on Dec. 1, Mississippi on Dec. 10 and Georgetown on Dec. 17.
Penn State opens Big Ten action on the road at Illinois on Dec. 28 and Purdue on Dec. 31, and hosts its first Conference match-up Jan. 4 against Northwestern. Ohio State (Jan. 11), Michigan (Jan. 14), Michigan State (Jan. 25), Iowa (Jan. 28), Wisconsin (Feb. 4), Minnesota (Feb. 15) and Indiana (Feb. 25) will also travel to the Bryce Jordan Center this year.
The Lady Lions will face eight Big Ten foes on the road beginning with their Dec. 28 contest against the Illini. The team also meets Michigan (Jan. 7), Minnesota (Jan. 21), Michigan State (Feb. 1), Northwestern (Feb. 11), Iowa (Feb. 18) and Ohio State (Feb. 22) on the road.
