MILLINGTON, TN — Scott Hugney of Frenchville paced a 16-hit attack
with a single, double and home run, drove in four runs and scored three
as Allegany College of Maryland remained alive in the National Junior
College Athletic Association Division II Baseball World Series with a
10-3 win over Elgin (Ill.) Community College in an elmination game
Monday night at USA Staduum.
The Clearfield Area High School graduate leads the tourney in
batting at .636, hits with seven and total bases with 13 and is tied
for the lead in runs batted in with four after three games.
Hugney got ACM on the board against Elgin in the first inning
with a run-scoring triple and then scored on an error. He singled and
scored in the third, chased home Jim Collins of Clearfield with a
sacrifice fly in the fourth and belted a two-run homer in the eighth.
Jeremy Potter of Philipsburg contributed a pair of singles and
an RBI while Collins added a double for Allegany (49-10), which will
play again Tuesday at three o\’clock against Brookdale (N.J.) Community
College (42-9) for a berth in the semifinals.
Brookdale dropped ACM into the loser\’s bracket Satrday night
with an 8-0 shutout. Hugney doubled and singled and Collins singled for
the Trojans, who mustered only five hits.
ACM bounced back Sunday to eliminate Iowa Central Community
College 4-3 behind the six-hit, five-strikeout pitching of Matt Smith
(Penns Valley HS). Hugney and Collins had two hits apiece and also
scored for the Trojans. Potter had one hit.
Grand Rapids (MI) CC and Louisiana State Univeresity-Eunice play in the winner\’s bracket final Tuesday night.
