Clfd SB: Lady Bisons Suffer Fifth 1-run Loss

BROOKVILLE - The Clearfield Area High School softball team wound up on the wrong end of a one-run game for the fifth time this season Tuesday as Brookville's Leah Dietrich shut out the Lady Bisons over the last four innings for a 4-3 win.

Clearfield had its opportunities with eight hits, one walk and three Brookville miscues but stranded nine runners, seven of them after the Lady Raiders ended the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

The first four batters combined for all of the Lady Bisons' eight hits, as well as the runs batted in and the runs. Leadoff hitter Alanna Luzier continued to do her job of setting the table with three singles and scored twice. Nikki Collins and Mandy Rowles had two hits apiece and accounted for the RBIs.

The Lady Bisons, a disappointing 5-5 halfway through the season, got a two-out single by Rowles that plated Luzier in the first inning, but the Lady Raiders countered with two runs in the second. Megan McKinley singled and came all the way around to score on Clearfield's lone error. Dietrich followed with an RBI-single.

Both teams put up two runs in the third inning.

A single by Luzier, a triple by Collins and a single by Rowles regained the lead for Clearfield, but the 3-2 advantage was short-lived as Courtney Keth rapped a bases-loaded single for the game-winning hit for the Lady Raiders (6-5).

That was all Dietrich needed. The junior righthander, who two-hit the Lady Bisons in a 1-0 victory on April 2, worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth, when the Lady Bisons loaded the sacks with only one out, and then finished strong. She recorded eight strikeouts.

Loser Toni Brubaker settled down after the third inning, too, retiring 10 of the last 12 batters she faced.

Two more tough games are in store for the Lady Bisons when they host Brockway (6-4) Thursday in a makeup contest and DuBois (7-2) Friday. Because Brockway does not have enough players for a full junior varsity team, the underclassmen will take the field after the varsity game.
