Kerala, India (AHN) - A boat capsized loaded with school children in Kerala, southern India. Officials say that 8 of the children drowned and over a dozen others remain missing.
According to officials the children who were all students who attended a local secondary school in Moorkanad were on a boat they used daily to cross the Chaliyar riverwhen the mishap occured. Police and local residents are now conducing a massive search operation for the missing children and account for all of the passengers whereabouts.
Wednesday's incident marks the second time in less than a few weeks Kerala has been the site of a boat capsizing. In early October four people, two children and two women, drowned when a boat on a tourist excursion sank in the Mullaperiyar river.
