U.S. Ship Delivers Aid To Georgia

Batumi, Georgia (AHN) - A U.S. Coast Guard ship delivering part of $20 million in humanitarian aid to displaced Georgians docked Wednesday in this Black Sea port instead of in the port of Poti, which Russian troops still control.

The cutter Dallas brought 80 pallets with more than 76,000 pounds of relief supplies, including hygiene items, food, milk and juices, said a statement from the U.S. Sixth Fleet public affairs office, according to CNN.

The arrival of Dallas follows the docking of the USS McFaul, which delivered 155,000 pounds of bottled water, milk, baby food and other items. The U.S. Air Force also conducted 50 flights to deliver relief supplies to Georgia.

The humanitarian assistance was prompted by the displacement of thousands of Georgians during the fighting between Russian and Georgian forces inside Georgia and in the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

Russian troops invaded Georgia on Aug. 8 to repulse the alleged invasion by Georgian forces of South Ossetia.
