The Glass Eye: NHL Trade Deadline

March 13, 2010 at 6:09 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

As promised, this week we’ll take a look at the trade-deadline moves, with most of the focus on the Penguins’ moves. We’ll also take a look at the playoff races around the NHL and predict the 16 playoff teams. The Eastern Conference was not very active on trade deadline day this season – but several big moves happened a few days or weeks before the actual deadline. The biggest was Ilya Kovalchuk,...

The Glass Eye: A Tiger’s Tale

March 4, 2010 at 6:23 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

The Olympics are over and we’ll look at the latest developments in Vancouver this past week, but first a little commentary on Tiger Woods. I’m on record saying that Tiger’s personal life is none of our business, and for the most part I have not changed that stance. However, he chose to hold a “press conference” to address his personal life, which makes it worth commenting on. I use the term...

The Glass Eye: Medals Galore

February 22, 2010 at 1:05 PM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

The column is intentionally late this week, as I wanted to see the US-Canada hockey game and report on it – and boy, am I glad I waited, because that was a classic game! We’ll discuss that game and other Olympic events from week 1 of the Games, as the USA has jumped out to a very strong start in Vancouver. Obviously there are too many events to cover them all, but below are some of my favorites...

The Glass Eye: Luge Lunacy

February 15, 2010 at 7:12 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

This week, I had planned to take some time reviewing the Super Bowl, previewing the Olympics, and wrapping up some other odds and ends. I’ll still talk about the Saints’ win last week – but the main topic will be the tragic (and very avoidable) death in Vancouver last Friday. You’ve no doubt heard by now about the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili during a practice run – I watched...

The Glass Eye: Penguins at Midseason

February 1, 2010 at 1:44 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

This week, we’ll take a close look at the Pittsburgh Penguins as the trade deadline nears – how they’ve done, what they need, their weaknesses, and suggested fixes.   After 55 of 82 games, the Penguins have 67 points, good for 4th in the conference and five points behind division-leading New Jersey. After a very strong start (11-2), the team has essentially treaded water since...

The Glass Eye: NFL Conference Championships

January 23, 2010 at 11:14 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

After a surprising divisional playoff round  of the NFL playoffs (at least to me), we’ll take a look at the conference title games this week and break down the matchups – and look back on why the Eye stumbled last week (1-3 against the spread, 2-2 straight up). We’ll start with the AFC.   NY Jets (+8) at Indianapolis: This is probably a game Colts fans are dreading. Many...

The Glass Eye: NFL Divisional Playoff Weekend

January 16, 2010 at 1:35 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

Now it gets serious – as Week 2 of the NFL playoffs draws near, the top four teams all spring into action, rested and on their home fields. However, if recent history is any indicator, one or two of these teams will not move on – used to be that the bye week/home-field combo was almost unbeatable for the #1 and #2 seeds – 24-15-1 against the spread and 33-7 overall from 1990-1999...

The Glass Eye: NFL Wild Card Weekend

January 9, 2010 at 1:35 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

Time for the Eye to focus on postseason picks – hopefully the playoffs will be exciting. I must admit that the second half of the NFL season wasn’t that intriguing to me. Sure, there were some fine individual moments, like Pittsburgh’s comeback vs. the Packers,  but so many teams clinched early and so many other teams were so darned mediocre…just failed to capture my attention...

The Glass Eye: Podcast Local Hockey

January 4, 2010 at 7:21 AM by Dave Glass · Leave a Comment

This week, the Glass Eye will take a look at local hockey. Yes, there IS hockey in Clearfield County, although not many know about it. Most Saturdays, a small group of skaters gather at the Bigler YMCA (aka ‘Biggie’) and play for 2-3 hours. However, late December brings a special event, the Biggie Christmas Invitational, a tournament which draws a large number of skaters to the ‘Y’...
