Morelli OnLion: An American Tragedy

November 18, 2011 at 11:13 AM by · 3 Comments

It’s been a couple of surreal weeks in weeks in Happy Valley. As the child sex abuse scandal continues to unfold, we can only sit back and shake our heads in disbelief. How did something like this take place at Penn State under iconic coach Joe Paterno? It’s hard to imagine a scandal of any type taking place at University Park, let alone something so horrible. It’s easily the worst...

Morelli OnLion: The Sound of Silence

What a mess we have here at Penn State. As news of Jerry Sandusky’s arrest broke, members of the news media waited for a news conference. We’re still waiting. In the days and hours since the biggest scandal in the history of college athletics broke, we kept hoping that someone at the university would hold a news conference to address this mess. Nothing. In today’s edition of Morelli...

Morelli OnLion: Bye Has Arrived

November 4, 2011 at 9:47 AM by · Leave a Comment

As the Penn State football team heads into the bye week, it is an astounding 8-1. It’s astounding because no one expected the Nittany Lions to be 8-1 at this point in the season. Many, myself included, expected the Lions to stub their toe somewhere along the line. We predicted that it would happen first against Iowa (a 13-3 victory), then against Northwestern (a 34-24 victory). The Lions are 5-0...

Morelli OnLion: Ah, finally!

October 28, 2011 at 11:58 AM by · 2 Comments

Ah, finally. It only took eight weeks, but Penn State coach Joe Paterno finally got it right. Last week, the iconic coach gave the starting nod to former walk-on Matt McGloin. He played from start to finish and was a big reason why the Nittany Lions were able to walk out of Evanston, Ill., with a 34-24 victory over the Wildcats. In today’s edition of Morelli OnLion, we’ll take a closer look at...

Morelli OnLion: 6-1 … How did this happen?

October 19, 2011 at 11:16 AM by · 2 Comments

The Penn State football team is 6-1. Don’t ask us how the Nittany Lions are 6-1, no one really knows. After a Week Two thumping at the hands of Alabama, the Lions have reeled off five consecutive wins. They haven’t been pretty wins, for sure. The Lions had to rally past Temple and hang on for dear life against Indiana. This week was no exception. The Lions hung on for a 23-18 win over Purdue on...

Morelli OnLion: The Defense Rests

For the first time since 2007, the Penn State football team defeated Iowa. The last time that happened, Anthony Morelli (no relation) was quarterbacking the Nittany Lions. The score of that game was 27-7. And while Saturday’s win over the Hawkeyes was not nearly as lopsided, it was still a huge win over a team that Joe Paterno’s squads have struggled against. In today’s edition of Morelli OnLion,...

Morelli OnLion: The Arms Race

October 6, 2011 at 9:57 AM by · 5 Comments

Another week, another ugly win for the Nittany Lions. This week, Penn State had to hang on for dear life against the Indiana Hoosiers in a 16-10 misadventure in Bloomington. While the Lions are 4-1 and 1-0 in the Big Ten, it feels somewhat hollow. Penn State has not looked good in any of their wins and the quarterback rotation of Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin looks more ridiculous with every passing...

Morelli OnLion: Shot in the Arm

We learned two things during last week’s Penn State game with Eastern Michigan. 1. Eastern Michigan is terrible. 2. Matt McGloin should be the Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback. With Rob Bolden in the game, the Nittany Lions struggled to put points on the board. However, once McGloin entered the lineup, the 3-1 Lions went right down the field and put the ball in the end zone. In today’s...

Morelli OnLion: Nearly a Temple of Doom

While I was sitting watching Saturday’s game with Temple, I could only think one thing: Are the Nits really going to lose to Temple? Temple? Really? As it turned out, my concerns were calmed when Penn State went ahead late to post a not-so-pretty 14-10 win over the Owls at the Linc. It’s often said that a win is a win, but this certainly was an ugly win. Had it not been for Temple’s lousy QBs,...

Morelli OnLion: Bounced by ‘Bama

September 14, 2011 at 1:01 PM by · Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of the Penn State football team, Saturday was pretty ugly. Despite having a 3-0 lead early in the game, the Nittany Lions fell apart and suffered a 27-11 defeat at the hands of Alabama, the No. 3 team in the nation. The game wasn’t as close as that score would indicate. Despite a sellout crowd dressed mostly in white, the Lions gave their hometown fans little to cheer about. Their...
