St. Mary’s Down Lady Tide 37-24

ST. MARY’S – In a game that lacked a lot of offensive continuity, the St. Mary’s Lady Dutch defeated visiting Curwensville Thursday night on the Lady Dutch home court, 37-24.

With the win, St. Mary’s improved to 4-1 on the 2017-18 season.

The Lady Tide quickly took a 2-0 lead on a basket by Tarah Jacobson 10 seconds into the game.

And that was it offensively for Curwensville until the second quarter.

The Lady Dutch finished the first quarter on a 17-0 run and then took a 19-2 lead early in the second stanza before Jacobson scored two baskets to make it 19-6 with 5:50 before the half.

Taking a 15 point margin into the second half, 27-12, St. Mary’s didn’t expand on its lead much, winning the third eight minutes just 5-2.

Curwensville did cut into the 32-14 lead with a 10-5 fourth quarter thanks to all 10 points being scored by Madison Weber, who ended up being high scorer of the night with 16 points.

Lady Tide head coach Bob Desmett said afterwards, “We didn’t play good early on. We needed to play the whole game like we did in the fourth quarter. The team needs to continue to work hard and get better.“

Curwensville was a dismal three of 15 from the foul line on the evening, something that wasn’t lost on Desmett, who commented, “Three of 15 from the line was terrible. We just can’t afford to leave that many points at the line. That really hurt us tonight.”

St. Mary’s was lead offensively by Lauren Eckert who scored nine points.

The Lady Dutch also prevailed in the junior varsity match-up, knocking off the Lady Tide by a score
of 39-8.

Curwensville (1-3) is now off until after Christmas when it will entertain rival Clearfield at home, next Thursday, with JV action beginning at 6 pm.
