Brockway Woman Accused of Stealing Funds from PSU DuBois Students

DUBOIS – Charges have filed against a Brockway woman accused of stealing funds from Penn State DuBois students.

Barbara A. Holt, 65, was charged with one felony count of theft by unlawful taking and two misdemeanor counts of theft by Penn State University Police on Oct. 30.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, an internal audit revealed unaccounted funds from various student groups at the Penn State DuBois Campus.

The missing funds were earned through various fundraisers held by each group. The earnings were given to Holt, who was the financial assistant assigned to Penn State DuBois student activities.

The funds were reportedly turned over to Holt in her office in the Hiller Building with paperwork being signed by the students and Holt.

Three of these transactions from Feb. 20 and March 1, were not included in a deposit to the bank made by Holt on March 17. The cash was unaccounted for, but the checks were deposited and applied to other accounts, police said.

The groups were reportedly not credited with their earnings and the loss was more than $3,100. The students had copies of the receipt that Holt had given them.

Another bank deposit on May 26 did not include several transactions from other student groups made in April and May. There were no records of these transactions with Holt in other paperwork. None of their funds reached their accounts, according to investigators.

A review of the situation revealed that the total amount allegedly taken by Holt was $5,710.01.

It was determined that Holt took the cash from the fundraisers but deposited the checks to re-pay other amounts taken, investigators said.

Holt’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8 during centralized court at District Judge Patrick Ford’s office.
