CURWENSVILLE – Finally, a home game for the Curwensville Area High School football team after two long road trips to begin the 2017 season.
And the Golden Tide made the most of it, defeating an outmanned Sheffield squad, 56-8, Friday night at Riverside Stadium in Curwensville.
It was a 41 point second quarter offensive explosion that did the trick for the Tide, now 3-0 in 2017, while Sheffield dropped to 0-3.
Curwensville picked up the game’s first score at the 6:31 point of the opening quarter on a 20 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Bryce Timko to senior wide out Josh Terry. Nick Stewart ran for the two point conversion giving the Tide the lead at 8-0 after one.
Then the fireworks came.
At the 11:05 point of the second frame Stewart scored from four yards out with Madison Weber tacking on the extra point.
Timko scored with 8:54 left on the second quarter clock on a four yard run with Weber once again hitting the extra point.
An interception by Golden Tide defensive back Devan Barrett gave Curwensville the ball at the Wolverine’s 32 yard line and with just 11 seconds after the last Tide score, Timko connected with Terry once again and Weber added the extra point pushing the Tide lead to 29-0.
A little over a minute later Stewart traveled 41 yards for the Curwensville score with the extra point attempt being wide left.
Timko found Noah VonGunden with just 49 seconds to play before the intermission on a 20 yard scoring strike. Weber added the point after.
Curwensville wasn’t done yet as Timko hit VonGunden just 22 seconds later, thanks to a Sheffield turnover on the kickoff, on a 39 yard TD toss.
The three second quarter touchdown passes by Timko gave him a total of four for the game. Timko finished nine of 14 for 186 yards.
Weber’s successful extra point attempt had the home team out in front at the half, 49-0, on homecoming night.
Neither team found the end zone in the third quarter.
Curwensville’s final score came early in the fourth frame at 11:33 when Stewart went 20 yards for the touchdown.
Stewart finished the game with 119 yards on 15 carries to leave him 189 yards away from former Golden Tide running back Nick Sipes as District 9’s all-time leading rusher.
Another extra point by Weber put the Golden Tide margin at 56-0.
Sheffield finally found pay dirt with 10:52 to play on a 65 yard run by sophomore Josh Agudio, who then also added the two point conversion on a run. The long touchdown run enabled Agudio to finish with 158 yards on 21 carries.
The Wolverines turned the ball over five times on three fumbles and two interceptions.
Terry had the other interception for the Golden Tide.
The Curwensville home stand was a quick one and done, as the Tide hit the road, once again, next Friday, traveling to Port Allegany to play the Gators with kick-off set for 7 pm.
The Gators lost to Brockway on Friday night, 57-18, giving them an 0-3 mark on the season.
