Clearfield American Legion Team Edged 5-4 by Brookville

HYDE — The Clearfield American Legion baseball team out-hit Brookville 7-4 but came out on the short end of a 5-4 Jefferson County League final because of errors and walks at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday evening.

The visitors relied on three pitchers from Punxsutawney, which was unable to field a full team, and starter Lance Pennington also delivered the key hit, a two-run double in the sixth inning.

Logan Johnston picked up the win, working the middle three innings and giving up two hits and two runs while striking out one and walking four.

After Pennington wiped out Clearfield’s 4-3 lead, Lucas Burkett came on to earn a save with two scoreless innings. He had one strikeout and allowed one hit.

Johnston reached on Clearfield misplays and scored on groundouts by Tyler Park to put Brookville ahead 2-1 in the second inning and 3-2 in the fourth.

The John Lewis Shade Post 6 Chiefs grabbed their lone lead in the fifth when Bryce Timko singled through the middle to chase home Justin Fedder, who had doubled inside third base, and Thayne Morgan, who had walked.

Will Myers logged two quick outs in the sixth before issuing three consecutive walks. Timko relieved, and Pennington lofted a high fly into the left field corner for the game-winning hit.

Myers hit Park to lead off the game, and that cost him a run when Joey Dipietro walloped a double to deep left field.

Myers fanned three but wound up with seven walks and two hit batsmen in 5-2/3 innings. He was charged with all five runs, two of them unearned.

The Chiefs (2-2) matched singletons with the winners in the first two frames.

In the first, Allan Myers blasted a double that one-hopped the fence in left field and plated Reese Wilson after he singled to left and moved into scoring position on a groundout.

In the second, Will Myers led off with a line single to left, and courtesy runner Alec Graham advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch before sprinting home on Harrison Peacock’s sacrifice fly to center.

Fedder had a pair of two-baggers for the Chiefs, who will play their first road game Thursday, going to Showers Field in DuBois for a 6 p.m. start.
