Clearfield Softball Team Loses 17-4 to Central

HYDE — Once-beaten Central remained right in the thick of the Mountain League race by socking 15 hits en route to a five-inning 17-4 Mercy Rule win over Clearfield in high school girls softball action at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

Aspen Bishop gave the Lady Bison a 2-0 lead in the first inning by walloping a home run over the left field fence, Kyra Mollura scoring ahead of her after reaching on a single to right field.

The hosts were staring at a 9-2 deficit before putting up another crooked number in the fourth. Walks to Makayla Ross and Erica Hanes sandwiched Abby Fedder’s single to load the bases. Molly Sartin’s forceout and Lindsay Hand’s double drove in the runs.

Brooke Cline extended her season-opening hitting streak to eight games with a fifth-inning double.

Fedder was the losing pitcher, but errors cost her six unearned runs before she was relieved by Hanes after facing two batters who scored in the fourth frame.

Central (9-1, 6-1 ML) sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, and eight stepped on home plate, with four of those runs off Hanes also unearned because of two of the seven Clearfield errors.

The Lady Bison pitchers each had two strikeouts with no walks.

Pacing the Lady Dragon offense were Olivia Smith with three singles, two runs driven in and three runs scores and Cassie Mock with a single and a double good for four RBIs.

Tierney Fernandes and Cam Feathers also had a single and a double apiece, while Maddi Metzler had a pair of singles.

Next up for the Lady Bison (0-8, 0-7 ML) are back-to-back games against Huntingdon, Monday at home and Tuesday on the road.
