Bison Win Streak Snapped by Mounties, 9-6

PHILIPSBURG — Twelve hits, a season-high, weren’t enough to carry the Clearfield Area High School baseball team to a fourth consecutive victory Tuesday.

Philipsburg-Osceola turned a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead in the second inning and went on to halt Clearfield’s winning streak, 9-6, in Mountain League action at the Don Womer Complex.

Led by Tommy Hazel’s two singles and a double, the Bison collected four more hits than their previous best output.

Eli Glass doubled and tripled, and Thayne Morgan and Zane Morgan added two singles apiece.

Hazel drove in three runs and scored two while Glass knocked in a pair.

Freshman Keegan Soltis fueled the Mountie attack with two home runs, good for three RBIs, and a single. He scored three times.

Gage Coudriet and Brandon Kephart each had two RBIs as Philipsburg-Osceola improved to 3-3 in the league and 4-3 overall.

Clearfield (4-4, 3-4 ML) gained the upper hand in the first inning when Thayne Morgan singled and stole second, Hazel doubled and Glass tripled.

Soltis tied it up with his first circuit clout after Bison starter Jake Sorbera walked winning pitcher Josh Earnest to begin the lower second. Later, Brandon Kephart put the Mounties ahead with a two-run triple and then crossed home plate on Landon McDonald’s sacrifice fly.

Sorbera faced only four batters in the third and left trailing 7-2 after Coudriet singled with the bases loaded but also was charged with one more run on Josh Bryan’s groundout off reliever Glass.

Soltis accounted for the final P-O run with his second long ball in the fourth inning.

Earnest spaced four hits in innings two through six before consecutive hits by pinch-hitter Alec Graham and the Morgan twins filled the sacks with one out in the seventh.

Hazel greeted Cam Domblisky with a two-run single and later scored on a two-out double by Glass.

Earnest struck out four and walked one while allowing 10 hits and five runs in his third win.

Sorbera was the losing hurler, tagged for six hits and eight runs, six earned. He had two strikeouts and four walks.

Reese Wilson followed Glass to the mound and pitched 1-2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

Clearfield will welcome Punxsutawney to the Bison Sports Complex Thursday for a non-league makeup game.
